San Gimignano

Town of beautiful Towers

Vernaccia

The people of San Gimignano have always lovingly tilled their vineyards, striving at the constant improvement of their wine. And they have succeeded, as in 1966 Vernaccia was the first wine to obtain the controlled name of origin (DOC); in 1993, it was granted the controlled and guaranteed name of origin (DOCG).
Vernaccia distinguishes itself from many other Tuscan wines because it is almost exclusively obtained from only one species of vine called Vernaccia of San Gimignano and its production is limited to the homonymous commune.
Vernaccia vineyards are located at an average altitude of 280 m above sea level, on hilly soil composed of sandy clays and yellow sands. Today, San Gimignano also produces other types of wines starting from Sangiovese grapes, such as red, rosé and new wines, in addition to Vin Santo, a dessert wine.
The production of olives is also very important for the people of San Gimignano; it is present since centuries and constantly evolving, to the point that the extra virgin olive-oil is close to obtaining the regional name of origin. The vineyards and olive-groves stretch out on uncontaminated lands with lively colours that stir emotions and vibrations that will last over time.
Scattered here and there in the countryside, there are farms with an old savour that can be visited to get better acquainted with the life of farmers and their heavy and exacting work.
San Gimignano is indeed a rich mixture of history, art, culture, folklore and old traditions; it is the typical town worthy seeing at least once in a lifetime to cherish wonderful memories of it.
